I’m not a programmer. Never have been. Yet I trade fully algorithmic portfolios and run a hedge fund built on strategies I created myself – most of them just a few lines of code.
If you’ve been told you need to learn Python to trade algorithmically, I’m here to tell you that’s wrong. In this guide, I’ll share the exact approach I use to build, test, and deploy trading strategies with virtually no coding skills – plus the tools that make it possible.
Watch the full video below, then read on for the complete breakdown.
Why You Don’t Need to Be a Programmer
There’s a misconception in the trading world that algorithmic trading requires serious programming skills. It doesn’t. Here’s what it actually requires:
- Trading logic – understanding when to enter, when to exit, and why
- A simple framework – a repeatable formula for building strategies
- The right tools – software built for traders, not for programmers
I know many programmers who’ve spent years trying to become traders and never managed to close the gap between coding and trading. They think like coders, not like traders – and those are two completely different mindsets. Meanwhile, I know plenty of non-coders who became successful algorithmic traders because they focused on trading logic first and kept the code simple.
Being a non-programmer can actually be an advantage. You’re not tempted to over-engineer things. You keep strategies simple – and simple strategies are the ones that survive real markets.
Tip 1: Use a Trading Platform Built for Traders
This is the most important decision you’ll make. The platform you choose determines how quickly you can go from idea to backtest to live trading.
I use TradeStation. It comes with a coding language called EasyLanguage that was designed specifically for traders, not programmers. Compared to Python, it’s incredibly straightforward – most strategies are just a few lines of code.
Here’s what makes the difference:
| Feature | Python | EasyLanguage (TradeStation) |
|---|---|---|
| Learning curve | Months to years | Weeks |
| Data access | External libraries, API setup | Built-in, click to load |
| Strategy coding | Dozens of lines + dependencies | A few lines |
| Backtesting | Build your own engine or use fragmented libraries | Integrated, one click |
| Designed for | Programmers and data scientists | Traders |
TradeStation also provides excellent free learning materials on their website. It took me just a few weeks to start coding in EasyLanguage. Other solid options include MultiCharts (uses the same language), NinjaTrader, and AmiBroker.
The point is: choose a platform where you can focus on trading, not on wrestling with code.
Tip 2: Use a Simple, Proven Trading Formula
Algorithmic trading can get very complicated – but it doesn’t have to be. My strategies are often just a few lines of code, and they work. The secret is using a structured framework that breaks the strategy into simple components.
I use the Mr. Breakouts Formula, which structures every strategy into four components:
- Point of initiation – where to start calculating the breakout
- Space – how far price must move to trigger entry
- Time – when the strategy is active
- Filter – what conditions must be met to take the trade
Once you understand how these components work, you create one simple code template and keep updating it with new ideas. Each variation takes minutes, not hours. And because the formula is universal, it works on nearly any market – from E-mini NASDAQ to E-mini S&P 500 to gold futures.
For a complete walkthrough of building a strategy with this formula, see the free 3-part masterclass.
Tip 3: Let ChatGPT Write Your Code
This has been a game-changer. ChatGPT is surprisingly well-trained on EasyLanguage. You can describe your trading idea in plain English, and it will produce working code in seconds.
Is it perfect every time? No – the code sometimes has small mistakes. But with the basic knowledge you’ll pick up from TradeStation’s free resources, you can spot and fix these quickly. The key insight: you don’t need to be a coder, you just need to understand enough to verify that the code does what you intended.
To put this in perspective: a few years ago, I paid thousands of dollars to professional programmers to code my strategies. Now I pay $20/month for ChatGPT and it does most of the essential work for me. The barrier to entry for non-programmers has never been lower.
The Non-Programmer’s Advantage
Here’s something most people don’t realize: trading is about trading, not coding. Being a non-programmer forces you to keep things simple – and simple is exactly what you want.
Complex strategies with hundreds of lines of code are almost always overfitted. They look great on historical data and fall apart in live trading. Meanwhile, a strategy with five lines of EasyLanguage based on sound trading logic will often outperform the complex one over time.
The traders I know who consistently make money share a few traits:
- They think in terms of market behavior, not code optimization
- They keep strategies simple and repeatable
- They validate rigorously before going live (see how to validate a trading strategy)
- They focus on building a portfolio of multiple simple strategies rather than one complex one
How to Get Started Today
- Get TradeStation (or MultiCharts/NinjaTrader) – set up the platform and load some market data
- Learn the basics of EasyLanguage – TradeStation’s free tutorials will get you started in days, not months
- Study the Mr. Breakouts Formula – understand the four components (point of initiation, space, time, filter)
- Build your first prototype – follow the beginner’s guide to building a strategy in 5 minutes
- Validate before going live – run the robustness tests to make sure your strategy is real
You don’t need tremendous coding skills. You need common sense, a desire to succeed, and a few good tools to start. The rest comes with practice.
